6 Features That Windows 10 Has Taken From Linux

6 Features That Windows 10 Has Taken From Linux

Windows 10 inspired by Linux
Microsoft has announced its upcoming operating system Windows 10. The name ‘Windows 10′ has surprised many as people were expecting it to be called Windows 9 .
Windows 10 promises some features which Microsoft users may find exciting. These features might be new to Windows but are they really new? Indeed, there are several features existing in GNU/Linux world for quite some time. In this article we shall seefive six Windows 10 features which might actually be inspired from Linux.

Six Windows 10 features inspired by Linux

Just to clarify, I am not saying that it is unethical that Microsoft has implemented some features in Windows 10, which are existing in desktop Linux. If the features are good and enhances user experience, every OS may try to implement those.

Multiple desktops aka workspaces

One of the most talked about feature in Windows 10 is multiple virtual desktops. In Linux world, these are known as workspaces. You can segregate various running apps in different workspaces. This allows you to switch between the applications in a better way.
Multiple workspaces in Windows 10
While this feature is being introduced in Windows in 2015 with Windows 10, in Linux this, perhaps, dates back to 1998 when KDE 1.0 was released. All the major Linux desktop environment support multiple desktop feature.
Multiple workspaces in Ubuntu

Task view aka window spread

Windows 10 boasts of a feature called ‘task view’. Clicking on the task view button brings up an array of running apps.

Window spread feature was introduced with the new age desktop environments. Both Unity and GNOME have this feature. Pressing the super key (Windows key) lays out all the running applications in GNOME 3.

Desktop plus online search

Windows 10 will have improved search. Entering a search term in the field will result in either a file on the local machine, an installed application or application available in Windows Store or from the internet (to be opened in Internet Explorer).
Windows 10 search
Ubuntu has done the same with Unity Dash and lenses/scopes. When you search for something in Unity Dash, it provides you suggestion in local files, local applications, applications from Ubuntu Software Center, the infamous Amazon search results, along with other results categorized in various ‘lenses’. This includes search results from social networks, Wikipedia and You Tube.

Borderless windows and flat icons

This is very minor tweak but the windows in Windows 10 will be border-less and will have flat icons in Windows Explorer. This results in a cleaner look.
Windows 10 borderless windows
If you remember well, borderless windows were among one of the new features introduced in Ubuntu 14.04.

Convergence of mobile and desktop OS

Microsoft has promised better convergence across mobile and desktop devices with Windows 10.
Windows 10 convergence
While there is not a single mobile device out yet, Ubuntu was first to foresee the need of convergence. It will be interesting to see how Ubuntu Unity performs on mobile devices when Miezu will launch the first Ubuntu phone later this year.

Windows 10 (finally) has a package manager

Windows 10 will be coming with a package manager of its own. That means you can install applications via command line in Power Shell. An image from HowTo Geek will give you a glimpse of it:
Windows 10 package manager
As you can seem using the command Install-Package Firefox, you can install Firefox in Windows. But as a Linux user, you know that package management is an integral part of a Linux OS. It has been in Linux since forever. One more Linux feature that inspired Windows 10.

FruityWifi network auditing tool

FruityWifi is a wireless network auditing tool. The application can be installed in any Debian based system adding the extra packages. Tested in Debian, Kali Linux, Kali Linux ARM (Raspberry Pi), Raspbian (Raspberry Pi), Pwnpi (Raspberry Pi), Bugtraq.

FruityWifi v2.0 has many upgrades. A new interface, new modules, Realtek chipsets support, Mobile Broadband (3G/4G) support, a new control panel, and more.

Ettercap is a tool able to capture network traffic and perform different attacks. With this module we can perform MITM attacks using ARP poisoning.

Nessus is a vulnerability scanner. With this module it is possible to scan hosts from FruityWifi without using the Nessus interface. We can discover the vulnerabilities present on each of the hosts to understand the attack surface and compromise them.

Meterpreter is an outstanding tool to gather information from a compromised host, manipulate system processes and/or kill them, and more. This module allows FruityWifi to compromise more hosts and use them to access more devices and networks.

This text will make your friend's iPhone crash !

This is a surefire way to annoy all your friends- a bug in the Apple operating system means that if you send this text to your friends, it will reset their phone.

This text is being called “The Effective Power Text”.

Here is the text only version that you can copy and paste into your own device.

effective.
Power
لُلُصّبُلُلصّبُررً ॣ ॣh ॣ ॣ

It allowed other people to send the "effective power" text message to other iPhones, causing them to automatically restart.

Apple is working on an update that should stop the problem.

It's already becoming something of a Twitter sensation, with jokes being based around it and people recounting the fun they've had playing pranks on their friends.

 Best comments ! :D :D

*When ur mom telling u to get home from the party effective.  Power

*When my girl is on her phone but not texting me back

Tools to Create RSS for Any Website

RSS feeds have become extremely popular over the past couple of years. Previously it was blogs which popularized RSS feeds, but now all major News websites, social networking websites and even forums have started providing RSS feeds.

In addition to that, some websites do not offer multiple RSS feeds for each category/author. Technically Personal is one of them. Initially I had disabled multiple feeds for some stupid reason, but now I do not remember how I made that change. This is where some free online services come to the rescue. They allow anyone tocreate an RSS feed of any website. Some are very simple while others are more advanced, so depending on your level of expertise, you are sure to find a tool that can help you get the custom RSS feed you are seeking.

1. Feedity

Feedity is a simple online tool to create RSS feed for any webpage. In addition to the automatically generated feeds, you can add a small level of refining like adding a Start and End block, to notify the service where each post starts and ends. If you wish to, you can upgrade to premium account where advance features like data integration, RSS feed merging etc are provided.

2. Feed43

Feed43 engine converts free-form HTML or XML documents to valid RSS feeds by extracting snippets of text or HTML. This service is not simple like Feedity, but if you want complete control over your generated feed, this is a great tool.

3. FeedYes

With FeedYes, you can generate feeds for any website or specific page, you can syndicate those feeds and put the headlines on your own website. All you have to do is, give the URL of the page you wish to transform and a tag. Truly a great tool for beginners.

4. WebRSS

With WebRSS, you can Create, Market and Track RSS Feeds for FREE! Also, you will be able to host any RSS Feed on your personalized start page for FREE! You can also Ping your feed to the major ping servers for free if you wish to!

Its a simple web-based tool that allows you to create your own RSS feeds from almost any web page, probably the easiest service around. All you have to do is simply point Ponyfish to the web page you want to create a feed from, then follow a few steps to setup which types of links you want to include in the feed.

6Dapper

Dapper allows anyone to create Widgets that track the content of any website. This can also be used to track the RSS feeds of sites that do not offer one. In terms of features, Dapper has the most detailed and extensive options, so make sure you read their tutorials.

Feedmarklet gives you your own RSS feed instantly, with no sign up required, probably the simplest and the easiest to use, but it requires manual updating of the feed that you generate. Using a bookmarklet button in the browser bookmark bar, users can easily add any page to the feed quickly. It won’t scrape content but makes it easy to add your own.

Page2RSS is a simple service that helps you monitor web sites that do not publish feeds. It will check any web page for updates and deliver them to your favorite RSS aggregator. It offers a bookmark toolbar button that provides a quick way to generate a feed while visiting any website.

9. FeedBeater

Possibly the simplest interface, where you just plug the web site URL in, and let the web site take care of the rest of the conversion. You can turn any URL into an RSS feed or email alert with FeedBeater

10. FeedFire

You simply register at FeedFire, input the URL of the page and FeedFire does the rest for you in the fraction of a second. All that’s needed is a FULL URL to the page you would like to have made into RSS. All bandwidth costs to host the new RSS feeds are absorbed by FeedFire.

New partnership:Microsoft and Arduino !

It’s a special day for the Makers’ community. Massimo Banzi is in San Francisco attending Build Conference, the biggest developer event of the calendar year for Microsoft and today Microsoft is  announcing a strong partnership with Arduino:Windows 10 is in fact the world’s first Arduino certified operating system!
Arduino Certified’  Windows 10 enables makers to easily create smart objects combining hardware-driving capability of Arduino with the software capabilities of Windows.
For example, a security camera can be built by using Arduino to power the motors controls to tilt/turn the camera and using Universal Windows Platform (UWP) to create great UI, to connect the camera to the cloud, to process the image for motion detection and for adding facial/voice recognition.
The makers’ community can now also enjoy Windows Remote Arduinoand Windows Virtual Shields for Arduino technologies – both released as open source libraries.

With Windows Remote Arduino developers can (wirelessly) access the capabilities of  Windows 10 devices as if they were physically attached to an Arduino Shield and leveraging Arduino functions directly from Universal Windows Application.
In this way Microsoft is enabling developers to extend their Universal Windows Platform Application with Arduino commands (that execute on a wirelessly connected Arduino device). Combining the power of Windows 10 devices including features such as Image processing, Speech recognition, Website parsing, Cameras and Advanced Audio pipelines with the power of physical world interactivity through Arduino enables incredible new scenarios to be created. Take a look at this Basic Windows Remote Arduino project to learn how to leverage this technology in any interactive project.

Retrieving Bitcoin Price Using ESP8266 WiFi Module

Before you read this post, I recommend reading these tutorials about the ESP8266:

Introduction

In this project you’re going to create a simple HTTP client with an ESP8266 WiFi module. Having your ESP8266 connected to your network, it requests the current Bitcoin price. This is an example on how to  retrieve data from the web.

First, flash your ESP8266 module with NodeMCU

NodeMCU is a firmware that allows you to program the ESP8266 modules with LUA script. And you’ll find it very similar to the way you program your Arduino. With just a few lines of code you can establish a WiFi connection, control the ESP8266 GPIOs, turning your ESP8266 into a web server and a lot more. Follow this tutorial to Flash your ESP8266 with NodeMCU.

Where to buy?

You can click here to get this module on eBay for less than $4.

Schematics (3.3V FTDI Programmer)
The schematics for this project are very straight forward. You only need to establish a serial communication between your FTDI programmer and your ESP8266. You can buy one FTDI programmer on eBay.

Wiring:
  • RX -> TX
  • TX -> RX
  • CH_PD -> 3.3V
  • VCC -> 3.3V
  • GND -> GND

Downloading ESPlorer

I recommend using the ESPlorer program created by 4refr0nt to create and save LUA files into your ESP8266. Follow these instructions to download and install ESPlorer:
  1. Click here to download ESPlorer
  2. Unzip that folder
  3. Go to the dist folder (here’s the path: ESPlorer-master\ESPlorer\dist)
  4. Run ESPlorer.jar. It’s a JAVA program, so you need JAVA installed on your computer.
  5. Open the ESPlorer

How to send commands to your ESP8266

When you open the ESPlorer you should see a window similar to the preceding Figure, follow these instructions to send commands to your ESP8266:
  1. Connect your FTDI programmer to your computer
  2. Select your FTDI programmer port (COM8, for example)
  3. Press Open/Close
  4. Select NodeMCU+MicroPtyhon tab
  5. Copy the following script into ESPlorer
Note: You need to add your own network credentials to line 2.

wifi.setmode(wifi.STATION)
wifi.sta.config("YOUR_NETWORK_NAME","YOUR_NETWORK_PASSWORD")
print(wifi.sta.getip())
conn=net.createConnection(net.TCP, 0)
conn:on("receive", function(conn, payload) print(payload) end )
conn:connect(80,"api.coindesk.com")
conn:send("GET /v1/bpi/currentprice.json HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: api.coindesk.com\r\nConnection: keep-alive\r\nAccept: */*\r\n\r\n")

Then you simply click the button Send to ESP. And you should see a query appearing in your screen with the current Bitcoin price and a few other detailsEverything that you need to worry about or change is highlighted in red box in the following Figure.

Retrieved Data

Here’s the data that your ESP8266 is requesting, you can access it with your web browser right now: http://api.coindesk.com/v1/bpi/currentprice.json
Below you can see the data that your ESP8266 requested which is the current price of Bitcoins in USD, GPB and EUR.
{“time”:{“updated”:”Mar 4, 2015 15:10:00 UTC”,”updatedISO”:”2015-03-04T15:10:00+00:00″,”updateduk”:”Mar 4, 2015 at 15:10 GMT”},”disclaimer”:”This data was produced from the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index (USD). Non-USD currency data converted using hourly conversion rate from openexchangerates.org”,”bpi”:{“USD”:{“code”:”USD“,”symbol”:”$”,”rate”:”282.5891“,”description”:”United States Dollar”,”rate_float”:282.5891},”GBP”:{“code”:”GBP“,”symbol”:”£”,”rate”:”184.6234“,”description”:”British Pound Sterling”,”rate_float”:184.6234},”EUR”:{“code”:”EUR“,”symbol”:”€”,”rate”:”254.3166“,”description”:”Euro”,”rate_float”:254.3166}}}

Troubleshooting

Sometimes your ESP8266 doesn’t have enough time to send the HTTP request when you press “Send to ESP”. So It won’t show any data retrieved. You might want to use this feature on the ESPlorer that is called “Send current line to ESP8266“. And send each line of your script at a time.

Taking it further
You’re requesting the current Bitcoin price, that doesn’t seem that useful… right? Wrong! Just think for one second with a $4 WiFi module you can request any data from the web, how awesome is that?
Now my question is: which data is important for your project? The weather? Sport scores? Just type in your search engine: “weather api”, “finances api”, pretty much any term that contains some sort of data followed by api will be available to retrieve data.
